Irish Mortgage Market Continues Strong Momentum into H1 2026
New figures from the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) confirm the Irish mortgage market is in robust health. Over 21,000 mortgages were drawn down nationwide in the first half of 2026, with a combined value of almost €6.8 billion. First-time buyers remain the driving force behind this activity, with FTB drawdown values climbing 10.5% year on year to €4.1 billion — the strongest half-year performance since records began in 2003. On an annualised basis, mortgage approvals have reached €17.6 billion in the twelve months to June 2026, the highest figure since that data series started in 2011.
BPFI Chief Executive Brian Hayes described drawdown figures as the most telling measure of real market activity, since they reflect funds actually released to borrowers rather than approvals still working their way through the pipeline. With BPFI now forecasting around 40,000 drawdowns by year-end, the momentum shows little sign of slowing.
